Sputnik

Fifty years ago today the former Soviet Union slapped together a little chrome ball with four antenna's on it and stuck it on top of a surplus intercontinental ballistic missle and shot it into orbit.
A half a century ago this was our first artificial satellite and it circled the planet going beep, beep, beep, more for effect than purpose.
It did, however, hearald the coming of all that we hold dear today, including the Internet, G.P.S., global communications and the information age. It also started the "Space Race" and led to our landing on the Moon.
It will be interesting to see what the next 50 years will bring, or the next 500 for that matter!

And to think that you failed to mention that it was also the 50th anniversary of the official rollout of the Avro Arrow. . .

Oh well. The CBC's 'As It Happens' committed the same sin of omission and did their mea culpa yesterday. ;-)
