Cow Farts Major Contributor to Global Warming!
About 20 volunteer cows will participate in the project run by the Swedish University for Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, about 65 kilometres north of Stockholm, officials said Monday.
Cattle release methane, a greenhouse gas believed to contribute to global warming, when they digest their food. Researchers believe the level of methane released depends on the type of food they eat but that worldwide, cows add 3 to 5% of greenhouse gases to the environment!
Project leader Jan Bertilsson said that the cows involved in the study will have different diets and wear a collar device measuring the methane level in the air around them.
"This type of research is already being conducted in Canada so we will be in contact with Canadian agricultural researchers in the near future," he said. The research will be funded by a grant from the government's Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning.

UH UH,,,and to think that this current global warming fad ISN"T the biggest money making scheme ever.
I know, I should get my grant to study the methane gasses (also a greenhouse gas) that termites emit. Hmmmmm.
This has been done sooo many times... I will say that the number of tons emitted is pretty big for what that is worth.
Take care.
Cow farts probably do contribute but instead of just having livestock to do the dirty work like in times past, now we have dirty power plants and vehicles to help the process along. That's where we need to focus our efforts not pick on the poor animals!!
" Only world government can tackle a warming which is global in its proportions. "
President of Earth. How brilliant.
Cute pics Allan.
Just thought I'd mention that I've posted a link to this article in today's Earth Hour article .... we'd love to have you join us :)
And I agree with you, Jane... seems like the stuff the critters produce is pretty natural compared to the stuff we humans produce.
reminds me of high school when my gov't teacher told us about the grants the gov't gives out every year...one was so scientists could study why seagulls are gay? Who knew???
I think it is all about being able to say they're "doing something" about global warming.... of course, they are...but it ain't anything useful
This is real. Methane gas--which is the gas in farts and burps--is a greater cause of greenhouse gas warming than is carbon dioxide. I'm happy they're doing this because if we allow one source to keep being emitted, it will negate all our other efforts.
This is not an either/or proposition. CO2 is a very serious problem, and so is methane. And even though CO2 remains in the atmosphere much longer than methane does, the latter is a serious problem. There are a couple of further considerations re: methane. First, to say that the amount of methane emitted by cows (burps, farts, manure) is natural is to ignore the fact that there are so many cows because of our apparently insatiable appetite for beef. So methane produced from agribusiness is still a human forcing issue. Second, methane from agribusiness is miniscule compared to methane contained in permafrost. As permafrost thaws, methane escapes. This is why scientists are so urgent in their warnings. If we don't act to reduce all ghgs soon, warming can become a self perpetuating process, which would then be beyond our ability to influence.
Even though i don't thnk it very likely at all, (one-in-a-million since the planet is to a large extent self-regulating) I sometimes have nightmares about a runaway greenhouse effect like what happened on Venus.
Apparently if conditions had been different there, Venus could have been a planet as beautiful and habitable as Terra, (Earth) insteaed of the sulphiric hell it is!
Let's not forget about us. After all, we exhale CO2! Maybe we should all hold our breath? How about everyone just put a plant in each of their rooms and plant some greenery on their property, and stop buying Hummers?
