CANADA, Land of the Wimps!

(I am writing this introduction a few days after the main article to make something clear. Sorry, it's not the natives who are the wimps, it's the GOVERNMENT who are the wimps for constantly giving in to the French Canadians and the Indians every time they try and extort money out of them. They only have to blink and the Federal Government throws more cash their way!!!

The Indians aren't stupid, they know a good thing when they see it and that's to twist the arm of the Government at every possible opportunity. Read my piece a little futher on about "Indian Giver" ---- and don't think that conversation hasn't been held quite a few times across this great land of ours.)

Although I dearly love this country and would not want to live anywhere else on the planet, sometimes what goes on here is disgusting!

Quebec has been holding this country for ransom since Confederation because they can't get it through their heads that France lost the war on the Plains of Abraham and the British were in charge after that.

The Separatists have extorted everything and anything they can out of Canada under the threat of separation, when in actual fact, if they ever did separate they would go from a "land of plenty" (thanks to Federal Government handouts) to the status of a third world country in short order.

They would be an island of 6 million whining Frenchmen amongst a sea of 350 million Anglos!!!< That's one thing the Parti Quebecois fails to tell voters in La Belle Province.

But, if it's not the French Canadians whining, then it's the Indians.

National native leader Phil Fontaine warned a blue-chip audience on Tuesday that the anger felt in many First Nations communities has reached a breaking point.

"Frankly, we are fearful of the effect this is having on the well-being and public safety in our communities," said the chief of the Assembly of First Nations in a speech to the Canadian Club of Ottawa.

"So here I am again today, hammering away at another group. Many of our communities have reached the breaking point. The anger and frustration are palpable."

A report in Tuesday's Globe and Mail quoted a First Nation leader in Manitoba threatening widespread economic disruption and a potential blockade of CN rail lines connecting Eastern and Western Canada.

Fontaine did not dismiss worries about possible confrontations this summer. While he has a track record of favouring quiet diplomacy over barricades, he suggested to his audience that this tactic has yielded few results.

"Consider where that attitude has gotten us — obviously not very far," he said.

Fontaine also urged governments to work harder to settle more than 1,100 outstanding land claims, noting that at the current pace of negotiations, it would take 130 years to resolve them.

Pointing to severe overcrowding in many native communities, Fontaine spoke of visiting Pikangikum, an Ontario reserve about 300 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, where he witnessed as many as 28 people living in small two-bedroom homes where people are forced to sleep in shifts.

Some parents go without rest so that their children can sleep, he said.

"How many of you in this room would be able to function Monday morning without sleep?" Fontaine asked.

The Conservative government has pledged $46 million over the next five years for the embattled community, which has been plagued by suicides and a lack of basic services such as indoor plumbing.

Fontaine has repeatedly called on the federal government to spend an additional $5 billion over five years to help ease aboriginal poverty.

"We only want what you already have," he said Tuesday.

The Conservatives shelved the previous Liberal government's $5-billion Kelowna Accord to address the gap in quality of living between Canadians and First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. The deal set targets to improve education, housing, economic development, health and water services, but details of how much of the money would be spent and who would provide the services were left to be negotiated at a later date.

Speaking outside the House of Commons on Tuesday, federal Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice said Fontaine had a responsibility to convince aboriginal communities and their leaders not to hold blockades, which he called "counterproductive" and harmful to the "goodwill" Canadians show toward First Nations communities.

"Someone is going to get hurt and I call on all chiefs, and the national chief in particular, to make sure that doesn't happen," Prentice told reporters.

He added the government is making progress at land claims tables, and suggested Fontaine was not accurately representing the state of negotiations. "There seems to be a great deal of rhetoric," the minister said.

Fontaine also spoke of how deep poverty in many First Nations communities leads child welfare officials to remove children from their families.

"The number of First Nations children today who have been removed from families and placed into state care is now three times the number of children that were in residential schools at the height of this terrible experience.

"It is my understanding that is not usually because of deliberate physical or sexual abuse, but because of poverty and its terrible consequences.… It isn't because of lack of parental love, as has been suggested," adding that the Assembly of First Nations has filed a complaint about First Nations child welfare with the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Fontaine pointed out that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Children states that child welfare officials must not remove children from homes due to poverty.

He then drove the point home by asking his audience to imagine how they would feel as parents if they were to return home to find their children had been taken into state care.

"Think of what it would do to them emotionally, and to you," he said. "Hopefully, you'll feel uncomfortable enough to do something about this."

Well I've got news for Mr Fountaine; First of all the native reserves down south here are a national disgrace and need to be cleaned up.

These people choose to live for the most part in substandard housing with multiple wrecks of old cars on their front lawns and rampant crime running through their community.

Local jails are housing a disproportionate number of Indians. The native population of provincial jails is hovering around 20% while the native population of the province as a whole is about 2%. (If you work it out that's ten times the national average!!!)

Blockading rail lines and having standoffs such as Caledonia and Oka to extort money from the Federal Government is not the way to go.

Phony land claims and welfare are no substitute for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and making something of yourself, after all you don't see the Chinese causing any trouble on their reserve. (Markham)

As for the Indians living on reserves up north by Hudson bay or whatever else God forsaken place they find themselves in I have some advice.

If the fishing and hunting is no longer any good, if you want to live more like people down south with modern amenities and conveniences, if there is no industry or infrastructure to give you a chance at making a living and the only way to get in and out of your community is by airplane, then there is only on logical solution to this dilemma,........................... MOVE DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't expect us to give you endless welfare, if the land can't support you, GET OUT! That's what the Irish did in the 1840's and 50's and what the Europeans in general did right up to the 1970's, so what's holding you back?

Amen, amen, finally somebody with the balls to say it like it is. Nobody, has the God given right to stay where they were born at the expense of another part of society. Perhaps reserves were the way to go back whenever......today that system should end and all people should have to sink or swim on their own hook, even the white welfare bums!

Holy Christ! Allan, you honestly think natives "choose" to live in these conditions!? Your batshit crazy! The government of Canada first tried to wipe them off the map (or what we call genocide today) and then they hamstring thier economic abilities under the Indian Act. Do you even know what the Indian Act is? Do your fucking research! And you are telling natives to GET OUT? Give me a fucking break, you GET OUT! Its THIER LAND. Christ, Im not prone to cursing and Im not liberal, in fact Im a liberatarin, hardlin conservative but this drivvle is outrageous. You are ignorant and, I think I'd have to agree with the previous anonymous posted, you deserve the Ignorant Racisr Peice of Shit of the Week Award. Hands down.

If they don't choose to live in those conditions, why don't aren't they seeking employment? In the last couple of years when employers in Western Canada were crying for workers, where were all the native applicants? When unemployment rates were in the single digits in those areas, what were the unemployment rates on the surrounding reserves? Why is it that those crying loudest about "opportunity" in public, are offered opportunities for their businesses, reply in private that they are not interested in that, only "percentages"?!

The Indian Act, and the accompanying difficulties that it poses in gaining financing only applies to those Nativeswho choose to live on Reserves. However I know Natives who live both on and off reserves who have obtained financing by being able to obtain financing through being able to prove to financial institutions of the means & intent to repay the loans. Funny, I don't hear Fontaine, or the Leftards, suggesting the Indian Act be done away with!

Of course Fontaine wants to create as much unrest as he can in the Native community, and trepidation in other Canadians, because it serves to increase his personal power. Of course to the simpletons responding here amd making claims that Allan Janssen is a racist, this claim is totally ridiculous, because to their minds Natives (or any other group that is disadvantaged according to their own perceptions) is a group apart, totally devoid of the flaws that make up the rest of mankind. I believe that they have been described as believing in the "myth of the noble savage" ("savage" according to their appeasers, not to those describing the appeasers).

If that's the case, why does it seem so often that one family, or other group, will come to power and proceed to claim all benefits as exclusively theirs, while denying opportunities to other band members?

Their land?!! There was once a learned individual who stated that Natives were well paid for the undeveloped land they held at the time, and that the cradle to grave care had to stop! He was a judge, and spoke somewhere in the order of six languages, including Japanese, Mandarin or Cantonese, and Russian.

Please feel free to refer to him as a "racist piece of shit"; although you may first want to know that he is Native and one of the founders of the AFN.

Thank you for expressing your mind Allan, especially since you must have realized you would have to indure the mindless braying of rude, asinine critics.

I have a few simple questions:

(1) Why do so many aboriginal people choose to live on reservations where conditions are undesirable, when they can simply secure employment and live more meaningful lives? Hey! they'd even get an opportunity to pay taxes.

(2) Why do aboriginal people throw household garbage in front of their homes, is it a ritual to keep away evil spirits?

(3) Wouldn't it be a step in the right direction for government to notify all Canadians (including natives), that the "welfare for life program" is coming to an end by a specified date, and that those presently living off the taxpayers of Canada better start looking for employment. I am talking about all nationalities, not just native people.

Showing one's 'low-brow' contempt to someone expressing an honest personal opinion with smears, leers and jeers doesn't do justice to the debate.

To the "award-giving" adversary:

It may fill you with puerile pride to wallow in your momentary self-righteous indignation in expressing a cowardly 'hit and run' retort, then scamper back behind the safety of your keyboard with the smug satisfaction of saying "I showed him, eh?" -- but really, I think you're well out of your league.

In fact, why not start your own blog and let us know where you stand on YOUR issues.

Incidentally, the constantly parroted word "racist" no longer has the punch it used to have; it has outlived it's uselessness, so try something more original.

Unlike the poster of this piece who demonstrates leadership in free thinking, you come across as a brainwashed buffoon who is comfortable by just following the crowd.

"Libertarian" here.

Listen, I resort to hit-and-runs when required, generally Im interested in acedemic debate, but Janssen's position is ridiculous and the comments bashing me are just as ridiculous, void of any real knowledge of what its like for a native person in Canada.

Why don't you move off a reserve you say? Because its the only semblance of a home they have left. Put yourself in thier position...leave your hometown and never return, your family, your spirituality, leave it all behind in pursuit of the all mighty corrupting dollar. Why should they echo our society when ours is a disgrace?

Secondly, many Canadians leverage thier proprerty for capital. Guess what, on-reserve, natives don't own thier land so they can't sell it. But of course, they should leave thier families and move to a city where they can work as a dishwasher.

Ihe pull yourself up by the bootstrap model of economic development may work for an individual here and an individual there but unless we address the structural conditions that lead to First Nation poverty, it will forever remain.

Im speaking of the Indian Act, which raises the cost of doing business on reserve. It prevents market forces from operating properly and the ineffective land tenure system acts as disincentives to economic development, impeding outside investment.

And it is indeed thier land. I don't care who you cite, we, Canadians swindled it by making treaties, breaking them and then saying, oh what you interpreted that wrong. When we said we're we going to hold you money in trust, provide you with health, housing and education, we we're just joking. Oh and that land we said you could keep, we didn't really mean it. The way we've treated these people is a DISGRACE. First we try to kill them all off, then steal their children, abuse and kill over half of them, now we expect them to be "productive."

More examples: Western Canada inacted legislation allowing the forced sterilization of Indians, 40,000 WWII native vets lost thier status for fighting alongside Candians, the right to vote was refused until 1960, and just last year, Canada rejected the a UN declaration affirming indigenous peoples be treated equally. Abiding by the rules certainly hasn't worked in the past.

They live in some of the worst socio-economic conditions in the world buttressed by the discriminatory Indian Act. This means that Canada flouts its obligations under the Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms while n atives suffer from low life expectancy, high prevalence of chronic disease, high suicide rates, severe unemployment, poor housing, and on, and on.

Welfare for life? More ignorance. First Nations are underfunded, yet the government peddles the appearance of throwing dollars at the problem so Canadian society writ large remains aloof and apathetic to the real reasons for such terrible socio-economic conditions.

And whats racists is calling natives lazy, as one commentater here has. Whats racist is mocking thier spirituality, as another commentator has. What's racist is Allan Jannsen spouting that natives need to get some personal responsibility because they are all wimps.

Natives want respect, dignity and autonomy. They want to be afforded the same benefits and rights as average Canadians. Above all, native people deserve justice, which should not be exclusive to race. If you believe this philosophy, then stand with native people in the face of hypocrisy; don't contribute to it like Allan Janssen.

Sorry for the long post, but you wanted debate, here's your fucking debate!

Hmmm ... well my only comment is ... if white protestant males are nearly extinct ... I can certainly see why!

Adapting to one's changing environment is the primary skill required for evolution of the human race, and it is apparent that this is the weakness of the WPM's who instead spend their time whining and moaning.

Yup ... definitely a species we can do without, and likely will soon.

Unfortunately you might be right about W. A. S. P. (white anglo- saxon protestant) being extinct soon, but let's face it, a thousand years form now everyone on the planet will be a light brown colour with almond eyes.
Since we won't have different races by that time we will have to pick something else to discriminate about! (I.Q.?)

Funny, I've wondered for years if it wasn't extremist factions of the so-called 'natives' who are racists. Bearing in mind that being 'native' these days is quite often little more than a legal definition (lots of us out in the real world have more Indian lineage than the guys with the paper) the continual tantrums seem a little amusing.
Sean's abusive language alone suggests he is so ignorant he'd like to take a dump on anyone who disagrees with him. Kudos to him! In present day Ontario this will get you points.

Riddle: What's a 'native?'
Answer: A watered down Indian (Canadian style.)
