Enough with the Evolution - Creation debate!

I was sitting here this morning looking at the piece I wrote yesterday about evolution / creationism and it struck me that I am like Don Quixote, swinging away at windmills.

No matter how good and pure my motives, it will all come to naught since I am fighting an enemy that has no real shape or form.

It is a "belief" I aim my raillery at, without realizing that if this false assumption can initially withstand the scrutiny of cold hard facts, then any attempt by your poor author to change the minds of these people is an effort in futility!

In other words, to put it very harshly and succinctly, these people are not thinking straight and the problem is not with their dis-belief of evolution, but rather the whole issue of being brainwashed by a mainstream Religion. I would have to approach the matter from the disease itself, rather than try and cure the symptoms. (Of which Creationism is one of the main culprits!)

To do this would be to attack peoples core values and I am not (unlike the Christian and Islamic Shaman's) comfortable with this.

To change the core beliefs of anyone is an arduous task that I don't have the patience for anyway, so I have to resign myself to the fact that people make their own "Reality," whether it is based on fact, or not!

In other words there is probably nothing I can do to convince these * enlightened souls, so why bother!

Don't approach the 'religion' of creation with hate - approach it with all the fervor and skepticism of science.

Study the scientific method and discover the truth for your self.

Get Perspective.

Divest from a uniformist model. Observe nature from the perspective that the processes that happen today - may not have been the same process in the past.

Recently, in my home newspaper, paleontologists observed the twisted skeletal systems of 99% of the dinosaurs on all continents. "It is most likely that the writhing is from asphyxia from drowning in floods or volcanic debris/ash."

What does this prove?
Nothing.
What does it support?
Both camps.
What do we do with this?
Keep digging.

Brad I do not approach creationism with hate. At the most I could say I regard it with frustration.
I wrack my brain trying to figure out how rational people can be so misled as to believe creationism (and most aspects of mainstream religion)in the face of all evidence to the contrary.
Could it be that emotion short-circuits the logic???
I take the easy way out and call them idiots, but they're not really. I just don't know WHAT they are and that's the frustrating part.

I have no problem with Creationism. I have a problem with people treating it as science.

If I had a musicians club and someone came to me saying: "Car repair is much better than music, so you should make that part of your everyday discussion" I'd tell them no. Repairing cars has nothing to do with music. It doesn't matter which is 'better'

Creationism isn't science, end of story. Even if it was true, it still isn't science.

I saw a really good program on PBS the other night about religion and science.
With the Darwin/Creationist thing the long and short of it was a simple statement.
Leave religion to the philosophers and science to the scientists. There is no reason nor need to trample on the others truf.
In a very indirect way this is the direction the Catholic Shurch has been going in the last little while, especially with recent statements made by the Pope.
This is a welcome and much needed breath of fresh air to the old stale arguments brought forth by fundamentalists of every persuasion!

why do many religious people reject the massive evidence for evolution is an interesting question.

are they brainwashed? yes

are they too lazy to do the hard work of understanding the evidence? yes

are they stupid? most definitely yes. they are very smart at some things, but i still have to call them stupid. anyone who denies the earth is round has to be called stupid. denying evolution is a fact is just as stupid.
