Bush will leave his legacy.

Bend over everyone, Georgie W wants to give us a parting gift.

From its inception the Bush administration has been driven by one goal -- to secure U.S. access to foreign oil. That was laid out plainly in 2001, in a document called Strategic Energy Policy: Challenges for the 21st Century.

U.S. conservatives believe the United States not only has a right but a duty to use its military might to secure its conventional energy supply.

Also, there's a line of thinking in Washington that says you can't pacify Iraq or Afghanistan without tackling Iran, because Iran covertly supports insurgencies in both countries.

Neither Bush nor Vice-President Dick Cheney is running again. They may feel they have little to lose in launching a conflict that fulfils their ideological mission and, once begun, will be very difficult for the next president to stop.

This dangerous situation should come as no surprise to anyone since Georgie has made his intentions clear right from the get-go. As a matter of fact, that's one of the few positive things that can be said about this administration, they have been outright honest in what they want.

To put a little "Perspective" on the situation I would like to quote from an editorial in the local paper by Michael Den Tandt:

Then there was the bombshell dropped last November by the U.S. intelligence community.

In a paper entitled Iran: Nuclear Intentions and Capabilities (you can find it with Google), the agency that oversees all U.S. intelligence gathering said: "We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program."

You might have assumed that would be the end of that. Given the unfolding disaster in Iraq, not even Bush could excuse or rationalize war with Iran. The Iraq war has already cost $500 billion US.

The U.S. economy is in recession. And the price of crude oil has shot to a staggering $110 a barrel. Iran produces an estimated 3.8 million barrels of oil a day, accounting for 5% of global supply.

No one denies that a military attack on Iran would push crude far higher, with disastrous impact on global growth. And the economic consequences are the least of it. A U.S. attack on Iran easily could lead to a corresponding attack by Iran on Israel, which then could ignite the wider Middle Eastern war that so many have feared since 9/11.

Here's what makes this a real concern. Bush and many of the people around him believe that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear capacity at all costs.

Their stated reason is that the Shia mullahs who control Iran are insane Islamofascists, and therefore cannot be trusted to withhold use of the bomb out of a desire for self-preservation, as the Soviet Union did during the Cold War.

Subjected to even a little scrutiny, this rationale doesn't hold up.

Saddam Hussein truly was insane, and even he didn't dare use chemical weapons of mass destruction against the Americans, when he had them, back in 1991.

The deeper motivation likely is far colder. Iran is acknowledged as the rising power in the Middle East and it sits on one of the world's last remaining large pools of cheaply accessible crude.
And that's the name of that tune Bunky!

(On a side note here, Canada has nearly as much oil in the Alberta Tar Sands as Saudi Arabia has so maybe that fence they wanted to put up between Canada and the States isn't such a bad idea after all!")

The Politics of Fear!

Back in the 1950's President Dwight Eisenhower gave a farewell speech in which he said' "Beware the Military Industrial Complex" and truer words were never spoken.

History has proven this warning as prophetic and all too accurate as we have seen over the last half century.

Companies such as Big Oil and Haliburton and all the defense contractors have called the shots in Washington and politicians have danced to their tune.

To give you an example of this............... why has no one in the current Presidential race questioned what the States is doing in Iraq in the first place?

Afghanistan is fairly cut and dried since that is the home of the Taliban and also al-Qaeda but we really have only two interests in Iraq. One is the "OIL" and the second was "W" getting even with Saddam Hussein for his father.

There really is no logical reason for America to be in Iraq and I can't for the life of me understand why nobody has said so!!!!

Sure I know the "politics of fear" goes a long way, but to ruin the economy to the tune of trillions of dollars, and thousands of lives, while the defense contractors make money hand over fist is NUTS kids.

But, who listens to me anyway!

Cloak and Dagger! C.I.A. in hot water again!

The C.I.A. is supposed to be a cloak and dagger type of organization so I am surprised at how much it has been in the news lately.

First they put the Ice on George Bush's flights of fancy and paranoia by reveling that Iran dropped their nuclear ambitions back in 2003, and now they are in hot water for destroying torture tapes so that no one can accuse them of any wrongdoing!

According to the intelligence agency, the tapes were destroyed to protect the identity of CIA agents and because they no longer had intelligence value.

Bullshit!

This C.I.A. is no different than any other law enforcement or security organization in that it will close ranks to protect itself and any information we get will be after the fact!

The New York Times, which broke the story, quotes current and former government officials as saying the CIA destroyed the tapes in 2005 as it faced Congressional and legal scrutiny about its secret detention programme.

Officials feared the tapes could have raised doubts about the legality of the CIA's techniques, the newspaper says.

The tapes are thought to have shown the interrogation in 2002 of a number of terror suspects, including Abu Zubaydah, who had been a chief recruiter for the al-Qaeda network.

The Associated Press news agency on Thursday obtained a letter sent to all CIA employees by the agency's current director, Michael Hayden, explaining why the footage was destroyed.

In the internal memo, Mr Hayden told staff that the CIA had begun taping interrogations as an internal check in 2002 and decided to delete the videos because they lacked any "legal or internal reason" to keep them.

Once again, with gusto, Bullshit!

The CIA acknowledges that these early interrogations were harsh, but Mr Hayden says that the CIA's internal watchdogs saw the tapes in 2003 and verified that the techniques used were legal.

"The destruction of these tapes appears to be a part of an extensive, long-term pattern of misusing executive authority to insulate individuals from criminal prosecution for torture and abuse," an ACLU statement said.
After the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US, President George W Bush authorised the use of "harsh techniques" in the interrogation of suspected terrorists.

According to one correspondent, those techniques are alleged to have included water-boarding, a method in which a suspect is held down and gagged while water is poured into his mouth in order to simulate drowning.

Human rights groups say that water-boarding - and other techniques allegedly used by the CIA - can be defined as torture under various international treaties to which the US is a signatory.

The Bush administration has always maintained that it does not allow the use of torture but the BBC's Jonathan Beale in Washington says the news is likely to trigger more questions about the interrogation techniques used by the CIA.
There are also questions over whether CIA agents withheld information from the courts and a presidential commission.

These questions seem to be rather silly since we know that, for example, police departments will hide evidence, change facts, whitewash information and outright lie to protect themselves and the C.I.A. makes them look like amateurs.

Bush put on ice.

CIA VS. BUSH/CHENEY
HUGE RAMIFICATIONS

Guest post by: John LeBoutillier

The startling revelation that all 24 intelligence agencies in our government agree that Iran stopped their nuclear weapons development in 2003 is a shot across the bow of G.W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

(Bush did this to the American people and now the intelligence communty is doing it to him!)

Seriously furious over how Bush and Cheney misused ambiguous intelligence data back in 2002 and 2003 to justify a pre-emptive invasion of Iraq, the CIA and the rest of our vast Intelligence Community made certain this week by taking the unprecedented step of releasing for full public viewing the latest National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) so that the American people, the media, the Congress and especially the 2008 presidential candidates know the truth - without a White House filter.

In other words, our Intel Community wanted it known that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons development program.

They wanted this known before Bush and Cheney take our nation - again - down the road toward an unnecessary pre-emptive surgical strike in Iran which would have devastating economic, military and energy ramifications.

Make no mistake about this: the Intel Community’s action is a direct shot across Bush/Cheney’s bow.

We have never - ever seen anything quite like this in our history. Here we have an Executive Branch Agency - the CIA - and 23 other departments/agencies - all of whom report to the President of the United States. And they are basically saying to him, “We no longer trust you to tell the American people the truth. You distorted and misused intelligence on Iraq and we are not going to allow you to do it again.”

WOW!

This has huge ramifications.

1) Bush is not just a ‘lame duck’ politically; he is now a Dead Duck.

2) The Super-Hawks calling for surgical strikes against Iran in the next year have been de-fanged;

3) Hillary is hurt even more in the Democratic race for wanting to go after Iran;

4) The GOP candidates - except Ron Paul - look like Bush Toadies for all salivating at the chance to go after Iran in an Election Year;

5) Bush/Cheney may trot out another excuse to hit Iran: that Iranian agents are infiltrating Iraq and hitting and hurting US troops. This is probably true and was predicted in this space 5 years ago. Retaliation may be justified, but not hitting Iran nuke sites;

6) In sum, this takes Iran off the table as a major 2008 issue, shatters the remaining credibility of the Republican establishment, crushes the neo-cons, who have caused us so much trouble, and puts this Administration on ice.

We effectively have a care-taker government until January 20, 2009.

Let Bush come clean on Iran, not the other way around!

Let's see if I have this right.

A U.S. intelligence agency reported yesterday that Iran had actually stopped their weapons program back in 2003 and was not nearly the threat the Bush administration had made them out to be!

That was yesterday. Today, as if he hadn't heard a thing, President Bush said; "Iran should reveal the full extent of its nuclear programme, or risk further international isolation."

Yes kids, this is the same guy who kept insisting there were "weapons of mass destruction" hidden in Iraq when all they kept finding was sand and more sand!

(This is also the guy that illegaly spied on Americans, and when they caught him said he was going to do it anyway and nobody said boo!)

I am not sure of anything about the Bush Administration except this..... Either they are really fucking stupid or they think the American public is, because something sure ain't right down there!

What Happens When the Right Wing Runs Things!

As of today, there are more than 1.5 million people in US state and federal jails, a report by a Washington-based criminal justice research group, the JFA Institute says.

The Unlocking America report, which was published today, also advocated changing terms of parole and finding alternatives to prison as part of a major overhaul of the US justice system.

"There is no evidence that keeping people in prison longer makes us any safer," said JFA president James Austin.
The report said that US crime rates, which have been in decline since the 1990s, are about the same as those for 1970.

Meanwhile, the US prison population has risen eight-fold since 1970, at great cost to the taxpayer, researchers say.

It says the incarceration rate has soared because sentences have got longer and those who violate parole or probation are more likely to be given prison terms.

The report said that every year hundreds of thousands of Americans are sent to jail "for crimes that pose little if any danger or harm to society".

It cited several examples including a Florida woman's two-year sentence for throwing a cup of coffee at another car in a traffic row.
Its recommendations run counter to the Bush administration's policy of longer, harsher sentences, which the government says has contributed to falling violent crime and murder figures.

The report was funded by the Rosenbaum Foundation and the Open Society Institute.

Can we spell totalitarian?

Naïve Americans who think they live in a free society should pay attention to what happened at a John Kerry speech September 17, Constitution Day, at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Guest Post by Paul Craig Roberts

At the conclusion of Kerry’s speech, Andrew Meyer, a 21-year old journalism student was selected by Senator Kerry to ask a question. Meyer held up a copy of BBC investigative reporter Greg Palast’s book, Armed Madhouse , and asked if Kerry was aware that Palast’s investigations determined that Kerry had actually won the election.

Why, Meyer asked, had Kerry conceded the election so quickly when there were so many obvious examples of vote fraud?

Why, Meyer, went on to ask, was Kerry refusing to consider Bush’s impeachment when Bush was about to initiate another act of military aggression, this time against Iran?

At this point the public’s protectors -- the police -- decided that Meyer had said too much. They grabbed Meyer and began dragging him off. Meyer said repeatedly, "I have done nothing wrong," which under our laws he had not. He threatened no one and assaulted no one.

But the police decided that Meyer, an American citizen, had no right to free speech and no constitutional protection.

They threw him to the floor and Tasered him right in front of Senator Kerry and the large student audience, who captured on video the unquestionable act of police brutality.

Meyer was carted off and jailed on a phony charge of “disrupting a public event."

The question we should all ask is why did a United States senator just stand there while police goons violated the constitutional rights of a student participating in a public event, brutalized him in full view of everyone, and then took him off to jail on phony charges?

Kerry’s meekness not only in the face of electoral fraud, not only in the face of Bush’s wars that are crimes under the Nuremberg standard, but also in the face of police goons trampling the constitutional rights of American citizens makes it completely clear that he was not fit to be president, and he is not fit to be a US senator.

Usually when police violate constitutional rights and commit acts of police brutality they do it when they believe no one is watching, not in front of a large audience. Clearly, the police have become more audacious in their abuse of rights and citizens.

What explains the new fearlessness of police to violate rights and brutalize citizens without cause?

The answer is that police, most of whom have authoritarian personalities, have seen that constitutional rights are no longer protected. President Bush does not protect our constitutional rights. Neither does Vice President Cheney, nor the attorney general, nor the US Congress.

Just as Kerry allowed Meyer’s rights to be Tasered out of him, Congress has enabled Bush to strip people, including American citizens, of constitutional protection and incarcerate them without presenting evidence.

How long before Kerry himself or some other senator will be dragged from his podium and Tasered?

The Bush Republicans with complicit Democrats have essentially brought government accountability to an end in the US. The US government has 80,000 people, including ordinary American citizens, on its "no-fly list."

No one knows why they are on the list, and no one on the list can find out how to get off it. An unaccountable act by the Bush administration put them there.

Airport Security harasses and abuses people who do not fit any known definition of terrorist. Nalini Ghuman, a British-born citizen and music professor at Mills College in California was met on her return from a trip to England by armed guards at the airplane door and escorted away.

A goon squad tore up her US visa, defaced her British passport, body searched her, and told her she could leave immediately for England or be sent to a detention center.

Professor Ghuman, an Oxford University graduate with a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, says she feels like the character in Kafka’s book, The Trial. "I don’t know why it’s happened, what I’m accused of. There’s no opportunity to defend myself. One is just completely powerless."

Over one year later there is still no answer. [Music Scholar Barred From U.S., but No One Will Tell Her Why, By Nina Bernstein, New York Times, September 17, 2007]

The Bush Republicans and their Democratic toadies have, in the name of "security," made all of us powerless. While Senator John Kerry and his Democratic colleagues stand silently, the Bush administration has stolen our country from us and turned us into subjects.

Bush at climate conference - maybe yes, maybe no!

The Bush administration has come up with a good-news, bad-news sort of thing at the climate conference being held in the U. S.

Georgie boy has finally admitted that there just might be something to this "global warming" thing and that action needs to be taken.

But, a plan for countries to set their own targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions has drawn considerable criticism.

Some delegates at a meeting of the world's top 16 polluters saw Mr Bush's comments as a US reluctance to commit to binding action on global warming.

Officials at the Washington forum said legally-set international targets were the only way to tackle climate change.

Mr Bush stressed that combating climate change should not damage the economy, and he again hinted that the US would not commit itself to mandatory CO2 cuts.

"Each nation must decide for itself the right mix of tools and technology to achieve results that are measurable and environmentally effective," Mr Bush told delegates in Washington.

But, his comments did not go down well with a number of the ministers, diplomats and officials attending the US-sponsored forum on energy security and climate change.

So, if I have this right, the U.S. wants to set it's own (low) CO2 cuts. What Bush is saying is; O.K., O.K. Maybe there is something to this global warming, but we are not going to do anything about it if it's not in our political interest.

Here we have another example of the US Government being very "re-active" on an issue when they should be leading the way with "pro-active" policies.

They just don't "get it!

Saturday Morning Confusion #46

I have been surfing the Internet this past week to get it straight in my head what the real poop is with Georgie W Bush.

(The reason for this article is at the very bottom!)

Here's some of the stuff I've come up with.

The mark of a good President is someone who is "Pro-active" to events. Bush and his buddies have proven since 9/11 that they are totally "Re-active" to situations and this is a sign of gross incompetence.

Since the failure to act on information about plans for 9/11 here is some of the mistakes this Administration has made.

Lying about the Threat from Iraq.

-Bush and his team deliberately misled Congress and the American public about the rationale for invading Iraq.

-Bush convinced a majority of Americans that Iraq was involved with Al-Qaeda and responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Yet the evidence shows that Iraq was not involved.

-Bush said in his State of the Union Address that "The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa" to build nuclear weapons. But, he had already been told by the CIA that the evidence was forged.

-Bush claimed to have hard evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. But, the UN investigators could not verify any of these claims and searches of Iraq revealed no such weapons.

The real reason they invaded Iraq may have more to do with the fact that Iraq has the second largest oil reserves in the world, and sits strategically in the center of the Middle East.

Illegal Wiretapping of American Citizens

-George Bush authorized the NSA to conduct illegal wiretaps on American citizens. Bush claimed that these were justified on the basis of national security. But, there is a legal mechanism for conducting emergency wiretaps followed by court approval within 72 hours. Bush ignored that mechanism and exceeded his executive authority.

Bush claims he has authority to wiretap anyone he wishes but a federal judge ruled that his actions are unconstitutional.

Torture of Prisoners

Bush and his team have set up a system of prisons around the world where prisoners can be tortured.

They have fought hard to build a legal case for torture but the fact remains that torture is highly illegal.

It is also considered an ineffective means of getting reliable information from a prisoner.

Bush is guilty of violating of the Federal Torture Act, the UN Torture Convention and the Geneva Convention.

Violation of International Law

According to the U.S. Constitution, International Treaties are part of the "supreme Law of the Land." They are not something that can be ignored when they are inconvenient.

Bush's violations of the UN Charter and the Nuremberg Charter are, therefore, impeachable offenses.

Let's look at some of the lies in greater detail.

Lie #1 - Uranium from Niger - Bush said "The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." in his State of the Union Address. The documents supporting that statement were forged.

Lie #2 - Iraq and 9/11 - Bush led people to believe that Iraq was involved with 9/11 by repeatedly linking them in his speeches. This was so effective that at one point 70% of Americans actually believed Saddam was behind 9/11. Bush has since admitted that this was not true.

Lie #3 - Congress Knew - Bush has stated that Congress had access to all the same information that the White House had. Thus he should not be blamed for making the mistake of going to war. But Bush was briefed many times about the falsehood of various stories and this information never reached Congress.

Lie #4 - Aluminum Tubes - Bush, Cheney, Rice and Powell said that some aluminum tubes Iraq attempted to buy were intended for use in a uranium centrifuge to create nuclear weapons. These were the only physical evidence he had against Iraq. But it turns out this evidence had been rejected by the Department of Energy and other intelligence agencies long before Bush used them in his speeches.

Lie #5 - Iraq and Al Qaeda - Bush still insists that there was a "relationship" between Iraq and Al Qaeda. But the 9/11 Commission released a report saying, among other things, that there was no "collaborative relationship" between Al Qaeda and Iraq. The nature of the relationship seems to be that Al Qaeda asked for help and Iraq refused. Al Qaeda was opposed to Saddam Hussein because Saddam led a secular government instead of an Islamic government. On 9/8/06 a Senate panel reported there was no relationship.

Lie #6 - Weapons of Mass Destruction - Bush insisted that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction but his "evidence" consisted mostly of forged documents, plagiarized student papers, and vague satellite photos. The United Nations was on the ground in Iraq and could find nothing. After extensive searches Bush was finally forced to admit that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction.

Lie #7 - Mobile Weapons Labs - Bush and his team repeatedly claimed that Iraq possessed mobile weapons labs capable of producing anthrax. Colin Powell showed diagrams of them at his speech before the UN to justify invading Iraq. These claims originated from Curveball, a discredited Iraqi informer who fed Bush many of the stories related to WMD.
On May 29, 2003, two small trailers matching the description were found in Iraq. A team of bio-weapons experts examined the trailers and concluded they were simply designed to produce hydrogen for weather balloons. But, for over a year, Bush claimed these were part of Iraq's bio-weapons program. The expert's report was suppressed and only recently made public.
Bush wanted so much to convince people of the need to invade Iraq that the White House set up a secret team in the Pentagon to create evidence.

The Office of Special Plans routinely rewrote the CIA's intelligence estimates on Iraq's weapons programs, removing caveats such as "likely," "probably" and "may" as a way of depicting the country as an imminent threat. They also used unreliable sources to create reports that ultimately proved to be false. By lying to Congress, Bush violated US Laws related to Fraud and False Statements.

The evidence below shows that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Gonzales are guilty of violating "Federal Torture Act" the UN Torture Convention and the Geneva Convention by ordering and condoning the use of torture. Many prisoners have died as a result.

1/25/02 - White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales wrote a memo advising the President of "the threat of domestic criminal prosecution under the War Crimes Act," a federal statute, for torturing prisoners. He advised Bush to invent a legal technicality --declaring detainees in the "war on terror" to be outside the Geneva Conventions --which, he said, "substantially reduces" the chance of prosecution.

Gonzales was later promoted to US Attorney General.

2/7/02 - Bush took Gonzales' advice and signed an order declaring that members of Al Qaeda and the Taliban are not covered by the Geneva Convention.
The memo requires that "detainees be treated humanely and, to the extent appropriate and consistent with military necessity, in a manner consistent with the principles of Geneva." While seeming to call for humane treatment, it is carefully worded to allow for violations of the Geneva Convention when necessary.
Bush moves prisoners to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and holds them for years without charges, trials, or access to lawyers. This is ruled illegal by a Federal Judge on Jan 31, 2005.
Bush sets up secret prisons run by the CIA in foreign countries to escape US laws against torture.

Rice claims European countries supported this plan.

9/26/02 - Canadian Maher Arar was arrested at JFK airport and sent to secret prison in Syria for torture under "extraordinary rendition" program. He was released a year later without charges. He sued the US government but the suit was dismissed by a federal judge David Trager on 2/17/06 citing the need for secrecy.
He wrote, "One need not have much imagination to contemplate the negative effect on our relations with Canada if discovery were to proceed in this case and were it to turn out that certain high Canadian officials had, despite public denials, acquiesced in Arar's removal to Syria." Thus the reason for the secrecy is not for national security but simply to avoid embarrassing guilty parties in government.

This sets a dangerous precedent that may allow Bush to kidnap and torture anyone he pleases.

On 1/26/07 the Canadian government apologized and awarded Arar compensation.

Dec '02 - Alberto J. Mora, the general counsel of the United States Navy, tried to halt what he saw as a disastrous and unlawful policy of authorizing cruelty toward terror suspects.

His 2004 memo details his unsuccessful struggle with the White House to stop the torture.

12/31/03 - German national Khaled al-Masri says he was abducted by the CIA arrested in Macedonia and flown to Afghanistan. He was then tortured for five months and released.

The CIA has admitted making a mistake in this case.

April 2004, photos of prisoners being tortured at Abu Ghraib prison make headlines around the world.

Low ranking soldiers are convicted of torture charges, falling on their swords for the White House.

5/24/04 - Seymour Hersh releases article detailing how Rumsfeld's program encouraged torture.

"President Bush was informed of the existence of the program, the former intelligence official said."

October 2005, Senator McCain adds an amendment to a defense bill that would outlaw torture by the United States. Bush and Cheney fight this tooth and nail to block this amendment but eventually give in after the McCain amendment is weakened by the Graham-Levin amendment.

When Bush signs the bill he adds a signing statement that basically says he can ignore the prohibition against torture under his powers as "unitary executive" and "Commander in Chief ."

6/29/06 - Supreme Court rules in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld that the Geneva Convention applies to prisoners at Guantanamo. The Bush wiretaps violated US law because he was required to get approval from FISA.
He can start a wiretap of a suspected terrorist at any time but must then seek approval to continue within 72 hours.
Attorney General Gonzales claims HJR114 gave Bush authority to conduct the wiretaps. But HJR114 only grants use of the "Armed Forces". HJR114 does not explicitly suspend the Constitution. Also HJR114 requires "The President shall, at least once every 60 days, submit to the Congress a report on matters relevant to this joint resolution, including actions taken pursuant to the exercise of authority granted in section 3".

Congress was not notified of these wiretaps.

Bush may have bypassed FISA because he wanted to listen to and analyze all international signals, not just those of suspected terrorists. He knew this was blatantly illegal so he hid it.

Bush says "We use FISA still. But FISAs is for long-term monitoring. What is needed in order to protect the American people is the ability to move quickly..... to detect."

Then later "There is a difference between detecting, so we can prevent, and monitoring. And it's important to note the distinction between the two."

The distinction is that "detecting" requires listening to lots of calls with a computer to see if someone says certain keywords like "bomb" in Arabic, or maybe even "impeach Bush" in English.

Monitoring is listening to a specific suspected terrorist. The problem with detection is that you have to listen to all calls, including yours and mine.

More evidence that Bush wants to listen to all signals is in Bob Woodward's book
"Bush at War," on page 303. " Bush summarized his strategy: 'Listen to every
phone call and close them down and protect the innocents.'

James B. Comey, acting Attorney General, refused to sign an authorization for the NSA program because it "did not comply with the law".

On March 10th, 2004, Alberto Gonzales and Andrew Card tried to bypass Comey be getting a disoriented John Ashcroft to sign an authorization from his hospital bed. Comey rushed to the hospital to stop them. On March 11th, Bush intervened personally to get the Justice Department to authorize the program.

Investigators may have found that Bush applied for an expansion of wiretap capability from FISA, was rejected, and then went ahead and did it anyway.

Bush claims going through FISA is too slow but legal emergency wiretaps helped capture terrorist Mosquera.

According to a report in USA Today, the NSA is collecting the phone records of tens of millions of Americans - most of whom aren't suspected of any crime.

The agency's goal is "to create a database of every call ever made" within the nation's borders. The stated goal is to be able to identify who is involved in a network of terrorists. But this same technique can be used to determine who is involved in
a network of political activists who might, for example, oppose the Bush administration.

Under Section 222 of the Communications Act, first passed in 1934, telephone companies are prohibited from giving out information regarding their customers' calling habits. All of the major telecommunications companies cooperated with this program except for Qwest.

Joe Nacchio, CEO of Qwest, was troubled by the fact that there was no FISA approval and that the program was so pervasive.

8/18/06 - In response to a lawsuit filed by the ACLU, US District
Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled that the wiretaps are unconstitutional
.

So, in a nutshell here is what we have:

-Bush lied to Congress and the American public about the reasons for invading Iraq.
-Bush conducted illegal wiretaps of American citizens.
-Bush violated the Geneva Convention by torturing prisoners of war.
-Bush violated International Law by invading a sovereign country for illegal purposes.
-Bush held prisoners without formal charges and without legal representation.

This brings me to my state of Saturday Morning Confusion............. why is this asshole still in office? Why hasn't he been impeached?

'Bin Laden' urges U.S. to convert to Islam.

You know, every once in a while ya gotta sit back and say to yourself "what the fuck!"

How "nuts in the head" are some people that they live in a dream world totally divorced from reality.

So, before we get to the main course I will give you some examples of fucked up thinking to the max.

-Argentina invades the Falklands and thinks Britain will just say "Oh well!"
What were they thinking!!!

-A guy who tried to put an ejection seat in a helicopter.
What was he thinking!

Or these:
-Inflatable dart board.
-A book on how to read.
-Wooden barbecue
-Glow-in-the-dark sunglasses.

Well, you get the idea! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!

"I don't know, but you ain't seen nothin' yet boys and girls.

Remember Osama? Osama bin Laden! You know..... tall guy, stupid beard, long robes!

Yea, that's him.

Listen to this, a new video tape purportedly made by al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has urged the American people to embrace Islam in order to stop the war in Iraq.

The release of the tape comes ahead of the sixth anniversary of the 11 September attacks.

It appears to show Bin Laden sitting at a table, dressed in a white robe and turban and beige cloak. His beard looks shorter and darker than in the video issued in 2004. Beneath him a banner reads in English "A message from Sheikh Osama Bin Laden to the American people".

Now the first part is sort of within the bounds of normalcy in that there is nothing obviously nuts about what he says:

"You made one of your greatest mistakes, in that you neither brought to account nor punished those who waged this war," the speaker in the tape says, according to the transcript obtained by ABC News.

"You permitted Bush to complete his first term, and stranger still, chose him for a second term, which gave him a clear mandate from you... to continue to murder our people in Iraq and Afghanistan."
The next statement is sort of sane as well. The speaker tells the American public that there are two ways to end the war in Iraq:

"The first is from our side, and it is to continue to escalate the killing and fighting against you."
Now, this is where we enter the Twilight Zone. The second way, he continues, is to reject America's democratic system and convert to Islam.

RIGHT! Islamic Radicals have terrorized America and most of the world and they think in their twisted little brains that we might convert to Islam to make them stop their war on us.

These assholes run around yelling "convert or we will kill you" and then say in all sincerity, "Either that, or you can convert!" (Or we will kill you!)
What are they thinking!!!

"It has now become clear to you and the entire world the impotence of the democratic system and how it plays with the interest of the peoples and their blood by sacrificing soldiers and populations to achieve the interests of the major corporations". "I invite you to embrace Islam," the speaker (bin Laden) says.
I wonder.......... if it's late a night and Osama is sitting by himself in his cave or tent or whatever and he is thinking about stuff......... do you think he drools and has sort of a vacant stare?

If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier -- so long as I'm the dictator.

America Is a Force for Good!

In spite of what the perception of the United States is amongst some countries, and contrary to the awful headlines, the United States is steadily making the world a better place in which to live!

Guest Post BY MARGARET WENTE; in the Canadian Edition of Readers Digest!

These are grim times for America’s reputation. It is the most hated country in the world.

It’s widely regarded as, at best, a bully whose recklessness and arrogance have drained its moral authority—and, at worst, an evil empire that flouts international law and insists on imposing its will on everybody else. Its president is a dim-witted cowboy, its politics are poisonous, and its people are fat, uncultured spendthrifts.

But contrary to the awful headlines and the international disdain, the United States is steadily making the world a spectacularly better place to live!

If you want to meet people who actually like America, try a Starbucks in Beijing.

Beijing has almost as many Starbucks as Seattle, and they’re crammed with young, global-minded Chinese people eager to practise their English.

English is taught in many schools there, because it’s the language of science, commerce—and the future. Chinese officials believe their educational system, in which students don’t dare challenge the teacher, is too rigid.

They’re desperately trying to change it so that students will become more creative—like the Americans.

Off India’s southern coast of Kerala, where fishermen have been plying their trade for centuries, a new technology is changing lives.

Cellphones allow fishermen to check the market price for their catch at different ports, so they can net the best deal. Some fishermen have doubled their profit.

The cellphone grew out of the fertile brain of Martin Cooper, an American who worked for Motorola. It was based on technology developed over decades by American scientists.

Today, millions of people in rural economies around the globe have leap-frogged landlines entirely and gone cellular. American know-how has improved their lives and connected them to the world.

The Chinese are crazy about cellphones, and theirs are more advanced than ours. Now they’re manufacturing them and selling back to us. That’s globalization, the great liberalization of trade, which we owe to the leadership of the United States.

“Thanks to the dynamism of international capitalism, all but the poorest people in the world have significantly more purchasing power than their grandfathers dared dream of,” writes British historian Niall Ferguson.

Everybody knows the United States is the engine of the world economy—it produces about 30 percent of the world’s gross domestic product—but not everybody knows it’s the biggest customer by far of goods from developing nations.

If trade ever slowed or stopped, those nations would be devastated.

The historic gulf between the haves and the have-nots is narrowing because of American economic liberalism. As Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General, put it, “The poor are poor not because of too much globalization but because of too little.”

These days the Unites States is reviled for its military adventurism, which has brought it to such grief in Iraq. But it’s also the world’s policeman, and very few nations want it to give up that role.

We need a “globocop,” and for now and the foreseeable future, the U.S.—not the UN—is it.

It’s U.S. military power that helps keep order in the world. Overwhelming U.S. might is what keeps the oil flowing. Oil is the lifeblood of every nation’s economy, and without it they’d collapse.

America has waded into trouble spots—Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti, Somalia—where others fear to tread; not because it had anything to gain, but because it wanted to restore order and get out.

During the Bosnian slaughter in the 1990s, the UN merely looked on; the United States had the moral courage to act.
It has also taken the lead in combatting the greatest threat the world faces today: the spread of nuclear weapons to rogue states and terrorists.

Meantime, American-style democracy is spreading—look at Central and South America.

In one generation, that continent has undergone an astonishing transformation from dictatorships to democracies.

Democracy (even if only in name) is now the form of government preferred by most people in the world. People today aren’t just richer than their grandfathers, they have more political power, too.

But perhaps the greatest gift from the United States to the rest of the world is its enormous dynamism, inventive genius and human talent.

From cellphones and the mainstreaming of the Internet to life-saving medicines, America is the motherlode of transformative technologies.

It attracts and nurtures the best in nearly every field, turning knowledge into new products and processes that enrich our lives.

It’s the place where a geeky university dropout became the richest man on the globe and then decided to give US$25 billion away.

Bill Gates’s capitalist-style philanthropy promises to transform the world as much as his software has. He is focused on international assistance to the very poorest.

At the top of his ambitious list is a cure for malaria, the scourge that kills one million people every year. A generation from now, maybe sooner, countless kids across Africa will be alive—and healthier—because of Gates.

These stories about America are not fashionable. But their truths are enduring. Of course America can be a reckless, blundering bully.

But if you add up the pluses and minuses, you might well conclude that what the world needs is not less America but more.

Bush Family Pet Announces Presidential Run!

Guest Post Robert Friedman:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Bush family pet, Barney, has announced that he will run for President as an independent candidate in 2008. Barney, who resigned from his post as Presidential dog earlier this year, is upbeat about his prospects for success.

“Barney is eager to run," says a close adviser. "In fact, Barney is always eager to run. It's his canine nature. Throw a stick and Barney will scramble after it without hesitation.

He and President Bush share that instinct, although Barney is bright enough to return with the stick. President Bush gets confused and just stands there until the Secret Service brings him back home to Laura."

Explains professional dog walker and close personal friend, Betty Donaldson, "Barney has a few bones to pick with the Bush Administration.

That's because Barney follows some simple rules in his life. Never pee in anyone's flowerbed. Engage in battle only when your doggie dish or territory is directly threatened. Never foul your own nest.

Barney feels that President Bush has disregarded these rules by idiotically invading Iraq, ignoring global warming, appointing crooked, inept cronies to important jobs, and implementing a wide range of other destructive policies.

Also, President Bush eats from the table, which disturbs Barney. He was taught never to do that."

Adds former Barney trainer, James Nelson, "Barney believes that George Bush should be whapped repeatedly on the snout with a rolled-up newspaper. While I would never endorse such negative training methods, I can kind of see Barney's point in this case."

Supporters have rallied to Barney's cause. "Remember that maverick image John McCain used to have?" asks Barney campaign worker James Bennett of Fort Hood, Indiana. "You know, before McCain started sucking up to the religious right and betraying the independent ideals he supposedly represents?

Also, Barney's Press Secretary and campaign manager Fido said Barney is the real thing. "He's never run with the pack. You might even call him a lone wolf. I admire that."

PETA President, Ingrid Newkirk, elaborates, "I think that being a dog gives Barney a unique perspective on human activity. Dogs don't torture each other, or lie, or pretend to forget things when called up before Congressional committees. I mean, find me a dog who isn't a better person than Alberto Gonzales.

Barney can see that we're really messing up in the dominant species department. My guess is that he's realized primates just aren't fit for the job. We've had a good run, if you ignore the fact that we're in the midst of destroying our own planet.

Well, hey, everybody makes mistakes sometimes, you know? Me, I think it might be a good moment for us to step aside and give another species a shot."

Film critic Roger Ebert believes that Barney's positive attitude towards public service was heavily influenced by American cinema. "Barney grew up watching old Rin Tin Tin, Lassie and Benji films. He saw that dogs could really help people out of serious problems, like being tied to train tracks or trapped in deep wells.

He also learned that humans aren't always particularly bright. I think watching these heroic dogs formed Barney's character. Running for President - a position that once meant trying to help average Americans rather than screwing them - is a reflection of those core beliefs." Long-time Republican political operatives disagree.

"I don't think this is a genuine campaign at all," says one anonymous White House advisor. "I believe Barney is sniffing around for a political appointment, or maybe even for the Vice-Presidency.

I mean, let's get serious. He's a dog. Granted, we were able to convince people that George Bush is competent, at least long enough to get him into office twice, which was frankly a miracle.

But even sophisticated political spinning won't get a yapping dog elected president. Maybe Vice President, but not President."

Political analyst Howard Fineman disagrees. "I've been pointing out for a while that this election cycle is tailor-made for a strong independent candidate. Barney fits the collar. He's a far better attack dog than any of the Republican candidates, who may behave as if they plan to bite you in the leg but are unlikely to do so.

Plus, as a dog of color, he brings far more diversity to the table than even the Democratic candidates do. I think we're all going to be a bit surprised by what a Barney candidacy unleashes."

France gets new President!

Nicolas Sarkozy, a U. S. leaning politician, has been elected as the new President of France. He will likely replace Tony Blair of Britain as the American lapdog in Europe and George Bush is holding out great hopes for him.

Meanwhile, his brother, Pee Wee Herman, has let it be known that Nick has a mind of his own and the U. S. should not get their hopes too high on unqualified support from France in the near future since the French are amazingly fickle.
