Proboscis Monkey

Their noses swell and turn red when they become excited or angry. They also make loud honking sounds as a warning when they sense danger, which make their noses stand out straight. They eventually evolved into Jimmy Durante - proving once again that evolution is fact!

Jesus Christ, I was only kidding, honest!

This is the tale of Bahaa El Din Al Akkad, a 57 year old Egyptian, ex-Muslim Sheikh who converted to Christianity more than a year ago and was arrested by Egyptian State Security and thrown in Jail.

No real charges except "Blasphemy against Islam!"

While not every Christian convert is arrested and thrown in jail in Egypt, it would make sense for the State Security Agency to arrest this guy. He used to be in Tabligh and Daawa (which is the movement to spread the word of Islam and convert people) and he used to preach in a Mosque.

If word of his conversion ever came out it could cause a huge ruckus in Egypt and inflame lots of people. Hell, he could get killed and that would spark the debate on why Muslims can't convert to Christianity to begin with. (Apostates)

The Christians would get up in arms, the Islamists would one-up them in violence and voila, you get yourself a nice case of secterian strife and conflict.

So, instead of addressing the situation or trying to fix the problem, SSI decided to employ their usual quick and dirty solution and jail the guy.

Silencing him would be far easier and less work for them than to actually confront this very real issue.

Said one blogger from Egypt:

After contacting a couple of people who are involved in such cases in terms of human rights, the word came back that this story is actually true. They have known about it for a while now and have been in contact with the guy's lawyer. They plan on coming out soon with their own statements.

So I figured I would tell you guys first. This is for real. The guy got arrested for converting to Christinaity and has been rotting in prison for the past 18 months for it.

I don't think I need to tell you how much of a violation to his rights this is, but then again this is Egypt and we really have no rights to speak of. But yeah, spread the word and maybe we can create enough pressure on the authorities to get this guy out!

Oh no you don't!

The "no-fly" list in the States is getting ever longer but the people on it are wondering what's going on! Lots of people with names like "John Smith" and "Mary Smith" and "Robert Johnson," while some foreign heads of state are even included by mistake. Also - 14 of the 9/11 hijackers are included even though they are dead!
Even worse, because the gargantuan lists have to be widely circulated, the CIA won't allow the names of actual terrorist suspects to be added to them -- in other words, the No Fly lists..........are you ready for it?........... Here it comes!......Only contains the names of people who aren't under any serious suspicion.

Just so you know!

What do we know?

I just finished watching, (again) the program "What the bleep do we know!"

As usual they made quite a few salient points in the program and it also sent me on a quick flight of conjecture about the nature of this universe we live in.

Without going into a long discourse about the subject, I was reminded of the saying "If a bear shi......no wait.... if a tree falls in the woods and nobody hears it, did it really fall?"

Yes of course it did because we are talking about it - so there it is!

BUT, by the same token it seems to me that if there was absolutely no conciousness in the Universe - no me, no you, no Martians or Venusians, no people from Utah, no God or nuttin, then the Universe really would not exist. No one to see it so it ain't there! See?

So the corollary of this is - that I guess we are important after all. ;-)

Sorry to bore you, please go back to your regular programming.

The hell you say!

Not even going to comment except to say that every word is true!

The president of the Vancouver chapter of the Hells Angels says people have been rude to him and............. his feelings have been hurt since the group was ruled a criminal organization by an Ontario judge last year.

In an affidavit filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Rick Ciarnello lists a number of public snubs including a couple in a restaurant who asked to be moved because they didn't want to sit next to him after he walked in wearing Hells Angels colours.

He also claims he has been treated rudely by his local supermarket staff, and he says many people are no longer friendly toward him, and instead fear him or avoid him altogether.

His lawyers say........ these snubs violate Ciarnello's rights under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and they want key sections of the federal anti-gang legislation struck down.

Just so you know!

One little Indian.

One of the reasons I started this blog was to have an outlet for all the stupid stuff that goes on in this world. A good rant might not solve anything but it sure makes me feel better to get this shit off my chest once in a while. I ran across another one today!!!

Let me see if I get this straight and never mind that the Indians here in Canada are flouting the law with their stupid land claims every time they need an injection of cash.
Correctional investigator Howard Sapers said the overall incarceration rate for aboriginal Canadians was nine times higher than for the population at large and the situation was even worse for aboriginal women.(Sob)

Basicaly this means that Indians are 900% more likely to be in jail and the women are 1,000% more likely to be inmates than the general population. (Native population in Canada about 2% - prison population about 20%)

Now, here comes the kicker!

Releasing his annual report into conditions in federal prisons, correctional investigator Howard Sapers said the challenges faced by aboriginal people in Canadian jails amounts to "a national disgrace."

"Despite years of task force reports, internal reviews, national strategies, partnership agreements and action plans, there has been no measurable improvements in the conditions for aboriginal offenders during the last 20 years," said Sapers at a news conference in Ottawa.

Even though everyone in jail is locked up and treated the same, (after all, they are just a part of the prison population, they are not housed seperately) Mr. Sapers tells us that it's the Native population that is so hard done by and mistreated!

"Aboriginal offenders are routinely discriminated against by the corrections system and are far less likely to get parole or be rehabilitated by their experiences in jail." The ombudsman says

Did Mr. Saper ever stop to think that the reason they don't get parole as easily is somehow tied to the fact that they are ten times more likely to get thrown into jail in the first place?

Almost any other ethnic group has integrated into North American society with little or no pain and I don't see why the Indians should be given any special consideration.

You can call these comments racist if you want but my mother always told me you couldn't get in trouble for telling the truth!

Oh for God's Sake!

Dr. Richard Dawkins has been one of the leading proponents of the atheistic point of view and according to some articles I have read he is slowly starting to preach atheism with the same feverous zeal that is displayed by some evangelical religious adherents.

He started off slowly with his first book "The Selfish Gene" back in the seventies, but has been gathering up momentum recently in his quest to disprove the existence of God.

He describes his astonishment that, at the start of the 21st century, religious faith is gaining ground in the face of rational, scientific truth.

Science based on scepticism, investigation and evidence must continuously test its own concepts and claims.

Faith, by definition, defies evidence: It is untested and unshakeable, and is therefore in direct contradiction with science.

In addition, though religions preach morality, peace and hope, Dawkins says; "They bring intolerance, violence and destruction. The growth of extreme fundamentalism in so many religions across the world not only endangers humanity but, is in conflict with the trend over thousands of years of history for humanity to progress –to become more enlightened and more tolerant."

In his latest book "The God Delusion" he has a few comments that I would like to expound upon, and a few that I would like to refute!
Consciousness is the biggest puzzle facing biology, neurobiology, computational studies and evolutionary biology. It is a very, very big problem. I don't know the answer. Nobody knows the answer.

I think one day we probably will know the answer. But even if science doesn't know the answer, I return to the question, what on earth makes you think that religion will?

Just because science so far has failed to explain something, such as consciousness, to say it follows that the facile, pathetic explanations which religion has produced somehow by default must win the argument is really quite ridiculous.

Nobody has an explanation for consciousness. That should be a spur to work harder and try to understand it. Not to give up and just say, "Oh well, it must be a soul."

That doesn't mean anything. It doesn't explain anything. You've said absolutely nothing when you've said that.

Now, Dr. Dawkins is right when he states that we don't know the answer to conciousness, but I believe he is dead wrong in saying that a religious explanation has no merit. (This in spite of the fact that I have absolutely no use for any mainstream religion whether it be Christianity, Islam or Buddhism. They are just interpretations of the Divine that are flawed by human agendas and purposes!)

We cannot look upon this marvelous Universe without some degree of awe and wonder. The notion that all of creation is only a matter of chance and random luck would be as big a fallacy as as making proclamations of blind faith to a belief system that was thought up by some fast talking shaman.

We have to look upon conciousness as our link with the Divine - since this seems to be the root of its purpose. We are living in the here and now of this Universe and although we have some empirical evidence of other planes of existence they are by their very nature beyond our ken.

This by no means precludes their own reality in a way that is not verifiable by us and this is where conciousness could play a role. It might be a link with other realities and this allows us to make conjectures about their validity.

From the book: "The Plain Truth About God-101" (what the church doesn't want you to know!)

The gulf between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom is so great because of our unique outlook and appreciation of existence! (Conciousness)

As far as we know, not even the great apes, dolphins, whales, dogs, cats, or any other living thing, has ever given even the slightest thought to our reason for being here!

You will never hear fido say to you, "What's it all about - Alfie.”

People, on the other hand, spend an inordinate amount of time and effort on the question of purpose. So much so, that it seems to influence almost every aspect of not only our lives, but everything around us.

We might see flashes of pseudo-cognizance in fido's eyes every now and then, but I can tell you for sure that fido and his buddies do not sit around and discuss the merits of art or literature!
