Can I get an Ahmen

A Quote:
Christianity, Islam, etc., like all religions, rejects reason as a means of gaining knowledge and guiding action; it holds that all important truths are grasped by faith in supernatural beings and sacred texts.

Hummmm!

I just found out that a hummingbird, flying around looking for nectar, beating it's wings at 50 - 70 times a second, can starve to death within an hour if it doesn't eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pass the honey.

100 Years!

Whenever things get a bit "much," I put it into perspective by saying:
"In a hundred years, what the hell difference will it make?"

Then I ran across this!

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Anna Nicole Smith didn't appear Monday for a meeting in the Bahamas requested by the lawyer for an ex-boyfriend who claims he is the father of her six-week-old daughter.

Never mind a hundred years, why does anyone care TODAY!

Please someone, answer this for me!

I think I'm an alien - I don't understanding you humans!

Oh God

While I disagree with Dr. Richard Dawkins contention that there is no God period, and would rather take a more agnostic point of view, however, I do agree with a lot of what he has to say.

This is an exerpt from his book "The God Delusion," where he makes some valid and pointed arguments.

America, founded in secularism as a beacon of eighteenth century enlightenment, is becoming the victim of religious politics, a circumstance that would have horrified the Founding Fathers.

The political ascendancy today values embryonic cells over adult people. It obsesses about gay marriage, ahead of genuinely important issues that actually make a difference to the world. It gains crucial electoral support from a religious constituency whose grip on reality is so tenuous that they expect to be 'raptured' up to heaven, leaving their clothes as empty as their minds.

More extreme specimens actually long for a world war, which they identify as the 'Armageddon' that is to presage the Second Coming.

Sam Harris, in his new short book, Letter to a Christian Nation, hits the bull's-eye as usual:
"It is, therefore, not an exaggeration to say that if the city of New York were suddenly replaced by a ball of fire, some significant percentage of the American population would see a silver-lining in the subsequent mushroom cloud, as it would suggest to them that the best thing that is ever going to happen was about to happen: the return of Christ...

Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the U.S. government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious.

The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this, purely on the basis of religious dogma, should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency."

Does Bush check the Rapture Index daily, as Reagan did his stars? We don't know, but would anyone be surprised?

My scientific colleagues have additional reasons to declare an emergency.

Ignorant and absolutist attacks on stem cell research are just the tip of an iceberg. What we have here is nothing less than a global assault on rationality and the Enlightenment values that inspired the founding of this first and greatest of secular Republics.

Science education - and hence the whole future of science in this country - is under threat.

Temporarily beaten back in a Pennsylvania court, the 'breathtaking inanity' (Judge John Jones's immortal phrase) of 'intelligent design' continually flares up in local bush-fires.

Dowsing them is a time-consuming but important responsibility, and scientists are finally being jolted out of their complacency. For years they quietly got on with their science, underestimating the creationists who, being neither competent nor interested in science, attended to the serious political business of subverting local school boards.

Scientists, and intellectuals generally, are now waking up to this threat from the American Taliban.

Dr. Richard Dawkins

Peek-a-boo

We are still seeing the constroversy over British M.P.'s Jack Straw's comment that women who come into his office should not wear a "face veil." (Niqab, Burqa)

There were three Muslim women on C.B.C. Television this morning who argued the different points of modesty amongst the faithfull.

One was dressed in normal Western style, one had a head scarf and the third wore a "face veil," or Niqab.

The woman who was covered up completely argued that this allowed her to maintain dignity and respect from other men and let her be judged by her intellect and personality rather than on any physical attributes.

She went on to say that it was written in the Koran that she should be covered and that she was in accordance with God's teachings.

The sad fact of the matter is that this poor woman has been sold a bill of goods by the males in her culture and bought into it completely.

First of all, nowhere in the Koran does it say that women should cover themselves with the Niqab, (veil) or Burqa (veil and mesh).

All it says in the Koran is that both men and women should dress modestly and that women should wear the veil over their "bossoms!"

Anything else is a complete fabrication by the males in her culture.

The Middle Eastern "man" is generally a mysogynistic, pridefull, self centered person who is full of himself and his "machismo."

They have a culture that thrives on the exploitation and subjugation of women and will do anything in their power to maintain the "status quo!"

Many years ago someone got the bright idea that not only should women cover themselves modestly, but should also hide behind veils and clothing so that no other man could look upon "his" women (plural too!) in a lustfull way.

They were there for him and no one else!

To perpetrate this myth that females should be covered, men started to tell women that it was "God's will" that they completely cover up to remain pious and faithfull adherents of Islam.

The women, being physically weaker and not in a position to object, were made to comply!

Over the years this has once again proved that old axiom; "Tell people something enough times, with enough conviction, they will believe just about anything!

Do we move the Jews again?

A couple of notes on the Mid-East situation.

A senior U.S. diplomat has criticized his country's role in Iraq while President George W. Bush says the United States is still expecting to win the war, but is changing its tactics.

"We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because there was arrogance and stupidity from the United States in Iraq," Alberto Fernandez, an Arabic-speaking diplomat in the State Department's bureau of Near Eastern affairs, said on Al-Jazeera television on Saturday.

Well, this is all fine and good for making political hay but the sad fact of the matter is that most of the trouble in Iraq has little to do with the U.S.

Irag is in a state of virtual "civil war" and it's not against the States as much as it is the (Iranian sponsored) Shia against the Sunni Arabs. Until this issue (and the Kurds) is resolved there will be no peace or harmony in that country.

The U.S. has one of two options, either get further involved in a no-win situation or get the hell out. Period.

NOW, I said some weeks ago that I would look at the situation in the Middle East in general terms and see if there was a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

After pondering this difficult question for days on end I am afraid that the only thing that will heal tensions in the Middle-East is TIME.

No amount of brokering will solve conflicts there in an expedient manner.

No amount of negotiations will heal the rift between factions in the Middle East except distance.

No person will have the sway and influence to unite all the parties in a comprehensive peace process.

No. Other than letting time make these issues irrelevant the only other solution would be to take all the Israelies and move them to the United States.

The best solution there would be to give/sell the Jews "Long-Island" and let them set up the state of Israel there.

It's either that or put them in Utah. We can then send all the Mormons to the Middle East, where with their multiple-wives, they would fit in quite nicely!!!

(Now we all know that this last suggestion was done "tongue-in-cheek" but the sad fact of the matter is that it has about as much chance of happening as any other solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.)
